CIGNA PARTICIPATES IN ACEH AND NIAS RECONSTRUCTIONS

The tsunami razing Aceh to the ground on December 26th, 2004, was Indonesia 's biggest human tragedy, resulting in more than 172,000 people dead, and hundreds of thousands of others separated from their families. Over 50% of buildings and structures in Aceh were in ruins and the rest slightly damaged when the big wave hit the land.

People in Aceh Nang g roe Darussalam were still mourning when news came that an earthquake measured 8.7 on the Richter scale hit Nias on March 28 th , 2005. Thousands of houses collapsed or suffered heavy damage. Survivors had to spend their nights in tents fearing subsequent quakes. The natural disaster cost thousands of lives; those who survived had minor and major injuries from collapsing structures.

Individuals and corporate entities in Indonesia , worked hand-in-hand to raise funds for the Aceh and Nias survivors. PT Asuransi CIGNA also took part in the disaster response efforts. The company's telemarketing team gave a day's earnings; the management collected money from all personnel. Even CIGNA regional offices managed to raise funds to ease the pain of the affected people.

In January 2008, PT Asuransi CIGNA received an award for its contribution and participation in the Aceh and Nias reconstruction and rehabilitation programs. Aceh & Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Board (BRR) presented the award –signed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono – to CIGNA
